Back-to-School Traffic: Stay Safe and Alert This August
Brian Ingram

The summer glow is fading, and the anticipation of a new school year is bubbling up. Families everywhere are busy gathering school supplies, finalizing schedules, and feeling both the stress and excitement of what lies ahead. Alongside this flurry of activities, August brings an important reminder wrapped in its title—National Traffic Awareness Month. As everyone prepares for the back-to-school rush, it’s vital to focus on keeping the roads safe for all, especially our children.

The Busy Streets of Back-to-School

  • Be extra cautious near schools and residential areas where kids are walking or biking. Children may be less visible and unpredictable, so stay vigilant.
  • Remember that school buses make frequent stops, and it’s crucial to obey the stop sign laws. When a bus stops, traffic on both sides of the road typically must also stop. This ensures safety for children getting on and off.
  • Recognize the heightened presence of student drivers. Many are gaining confidence behind the wheel and may require more space and patience during their commutes.

School Zones and Parking Lot Etiquette

  • School drop-off and pick-up times can be chaotic and congested. Patience and attentiveness are key to navigating these busy zones without incident.
  • Engage in conversations with your children about safe walking and biking practices. Utilize crosswalks, wear helmets, and avoid distractions from devices.

Make Safety a Priority

Just a few intentional adjustments to your routine can make the roads much safer during this time. Set an example by focusing on the road and not your phone, maintaining safe distances from buses and students, and committing to a little extra time and patience.

At the intersection of excitement and caution lies an opportunity for us all to lead by example. As we embrace the back-to-school chaos, let’s ensure safety remains a shared responsibility.
